Encompassing seven spring-fed rivers and surrounding state forest, Citrus County is an attraction for land and water lovers alike. Centrally located along Florida’s Nature Coast, Citrus County is 70 miles north of Tampa and St. Petersburg and 60 miles west of Orlando. It’s geography rises from sea level at the Gulf and rivers of Crystal River and Homosassa, to hills, forest, and farms in the central part of the county. It then falls again in eastern Citrus County to allow you the beauty of lakes in Inverness.
45 miles of the Withlacoochee River borders the county, and is ideal for kayaking, canoeing, and boating. The lakes in Inverness, known as the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes, is an ideal place for nature lovers and fisherman. Nature abounds in each of these areas, and you may see wildlife that would be rare to see in other locales.
The springs throughout the area flow at a constant temperature of 72 degrees. These spring-fed streams provide the endangered West Indian Manatee, America’s largest fresh water mammal, a favored winter habitat. Citrus Countians make continuous efforts to protect this American cousin of the elephant. Though they can be seen year round, large herds of manatee make Citrus County home from December through March, and plenty of businesses provide diving tours for your first hand experience.
With average summer days in the 80s and winter averages in the 60s, Citrus County is a pleasant climate to encourage enjoyment of the outdoors.
